VILLAGE OF CHAGRIN FALLS
ARTS COMMISSION
October 6, 2008

Members present: Jean Hood, Scott Lax, Don Edelman, Dwight Milko

The meeting was called to order at 6pm at Valley Art Center.

Valley Art Center

VAC director Ann Chaney welcomed the commission and guests. She talked about the newly renovated facility and the proposed renovation for the other half of the building. The commission toured the facility and the wonderful improvements to the front of the building, gallery, and classrooms.

Spillway Project

The three Spillway partners were introduced. Bill Phillips, Darren Wyville, and Bob Darden talked about the proposed project for adaptive re use of the bag factory. They explained that they will keep much of the historic equipment and structure so visitors can learn about the history of the site while dining. They talked about cultural ideas for the facility including films, art exhibits, and educational programs. They showed a diagram of their proposals. The commission and audience were enthused about the project and the possibilities for arts and economic development in the Village in exchange for a falling down mill. Traffic and parking problems are an unresolved concern.

VAC Sign

The Commission discussed ways to bypass the sign ordinance in order to approve the proposed VAC sign. Dwight is exploring the creation of a new ordinance that uses the term mural instead of sign. The ordinance could possible only apply to non profit arts facilities in the Village. Art Center board members in the audience were upset with the Village over the no vote for their sign variance. The commission unanimously approved support of the proposed VAC sign and recommended that the Village design new legislation to accept the VAC sign proposal.

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be Monday January 5, 2009 at Chagrin Valley Little Theatre.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:00pm.
