VILLAGE OF CHAGRIN FALLS
Arts Commission
January 5, 2009

Members present: Jean Hood, Scott Lax, Don Edelman, Dwight Milko
The meeting was called to order at 6pm on the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre’s Main Stage. The minutes from the October meeting were approved.

CVLT Presentation
CVLT president Tom Neff welcomed the commission and guests to the Theatre. Attached to the minutes is Tom’s commentary on the Theatre’s contributions to the Village and support for other community organizations.

Review of 2008 Commission Projects
Dwight Milko stated the dream of the Village as a Performing Arts District and the desire of the Commission to work to obtain more arts and cultural opportunities for the Village to economically benefit the Village. He wants the Village to be known as a center for cultural activities to help Village business.

The VAC sign legislation was discussed. Dwight Milko asked that legislation move forward in the form of a mural. Councilman Watterson is opposed to approving separate legislation for arts organizations to permit murals. The Commission will continue to work with planning and zoning to develop mural legislation.

In addition to the sign proposal, a review of other 2008 accomplishments included meeting with the parks commission and a work to construct an outdoor stage in Riverside Park, a budget request from CFAC, a meeting with the Spillway partners, a public art discussion with artist Dale Slaven, a proposal for a high school film festival with Andrew Weaver, and meetings and tours at VAC and CVLT.

Scott Lax proposed goals for 2009. He thinks we should explore ways the Commission can be inclusive for all residents of the Village. Tom Brick suggested the Commission use the Village website to encourage feedback from residents. Dwight suggested a survey to residents to gage opinion. The Mayor suggested the Commission work closely with CFAC to promote arts programs.

New Business
Mary Ann Ponce presented a proposal for an annual documentary film festival in honor of her son David, a young film-maker who died at age 20 two years ago. The proposal is attached. The Commission very much supported the idea to be staged at CVLT, the high school auditorium, and perhaps Spillway. The Commission will seek the approval of VAC and CVLT boards to help produce the festival and consult with CFAC on the project. The Commission agreed to work to form a committee and obtain approval from Council as the festival shapes up.

Backstage Tour and Special Effects
CVLT Technical Director Edmund Wolff showed off special effects from Wizard of Oz with the new screen. A backstage tour of the Theatre followed. A good time was had by all.

The next meeting will be Monday, March 25, 2009 at 6:00 P.M. at the Village of Chagrin Falls Council Chambers.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:00pm.
